What is Mindful Eating?

We need to become friends with food again. It’s a relationship we need to spend time on and really invest in. When we go from obsessing about diet foods and eating foods that nourish us, from obsessing about losing weight to obsessing about learning how to thrive with better health, we enjoy the journey of discovering what is best for us. Love yourself through conscious eating and learn where, when and how to eat your way to health.

Mindful eating is deliberately bringing attention to our external environment and to our internal environment while we’re eating—without criticism or judgement.

Mindful eating involves deliberately (purposely) bringing our full attention to our external environment, so that might include looking at the food in our bowls and appreciating it as a piece of art— appreciating the colours, the shapes, and the textures before we begin to eat.

It also involves smelling the food—appreciating the aromas before we begin to eat, like people might sniff a fine wine for its aroma.

We bring deliberate attention to the internal environment, so once the food is in our mouth, we focus our full attention on the mouth—on the textures, on the flavours, even the temperatures of the food. Fully absorbed and enjoying what we’re eating.

It sounds radical, and maybe scary for some initially but it’s really fun to do. So we bring full attention to the external environment and the internal environment while we’re eating, and the internal environment includes what our mind is thinking about, how our heart feels about the food, how our mouth experiences the food, and then how the food feels as it goes into our digestive system and then ultimately out to our cells.

The last part of the definition without criticism or judgement is very important. This is where we change the inner critic to inner curiosity and where we add the crucial ingredient of Self Compassion.


Mindful Eating is Now an Evidence Based and Effective Approach for Treatment of Weight Management, Emotional and Binge Eating, Relapse Management, Stress Management  and Body Image Issues Resulting from Dieting Syndrome.

Mindful Eating is much more than “eating slowly, without distraction.” While that’s certainly an important part of it, at Life Therapies Clinic we believe that Mindful Eating encompasses the entire process of eating:

  • Eating with the intention of caring for yourself
  • Eating with the attention necessary for noticing and enjoying your food and its effects on your body
  • Awareness of your physical and emotional cues
  • Recognition of your non-hunger triggers for eating

  • Choosing food for both enjoyment and nourishment
  • Eating for optimal satisfaction and satiety
  • Using the fuel you’ve consumed to live the vibrant life you crave

Trainer: Bridgeen Rea

Bridgeen has been studying mindfulness for over 12 years and teaching it in Belfast for more than six years. She also had 20 year career as communications professional but her enthusiasm for mindfulness and bringing the ‘practice’ into daily life led her to teach mindfulness part-time eventually leaving her Civil Service press officer job to set up her business ‘Immeasurable Minds’.

Bridgeen has spent four years studying on the Masters in Mindfulness programme at Bangor University, Wales and is a qualified yoga teacher.  She offers courses, classes and retreats of mindfulness across Northern Ireland www.immeasurableminds.co.uk

Her inspiration to teach and practice mindfulness comes from her teacher, Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh and the community he founded in Plum Village, France.  She is a member his Tiep Heim Order of Lay Buddhist Practitioners.
